I recall that episode from the clip,a good one but hardly any weak ones in the whole series. Brenda was an artists model who replaced Miss Jones downstairs.

Agreed. I often find myself having sympathy for Rigsby though. How he yearns to be better and wants to be part of a high-brow crowd. And how he gets frustrated that things go wrong for him.

But that's the character. He is as unashamedly ignorant as he is naïve and innocent.

Indeed. I watch Rising Damp with the missus sometimes and I am laughing and she says "What? There's nothing funny"

But I am laughing at Rigsby. Just because it's Rigsby. The whole character is the complete package. He only has to walk into a room and I laugh. Just because the whole persona and charicature are just funny.

As i said, legendary stuff.

Re: "I hate Martin Welbourne"
Russ, like most of David Nobbs' stuff, it's very gentle. You have to let yourself get enveloped in it. It's worth every minute of it.

Though, to paraphrase the cowboy in Big Lebowski, I didn't much care for when Ponsonby passed.

Russ

People are stupid these days. In Rising Damp, Philip always got the better of Rigsby and all of the sympathy was with Philip. He was articulate, handsome and well educated (as opposed to Rigsby).

In Love thy neighbour, Jack was a thick, racist bigot who is occasionally allowed to redeem himself, usually by being bettered by the pleasant west indian couple next door.

The only two elements of racism here are

1) Showing that only ignorant people judge others by the colour of their skin.
2) Assuming that racism is unique to white english people.

These programs were actually educational in their own way and they used robust language to demonstrate their point.

Re: "I hate Martin Welbourne"
Rising Damp and Fawlty Towers are by far my favourite ever comedies.

Two characters that are completely and utterly original and, what I like, are completely out of sync with todays PC world.

Leonard Rossiter's performances of Rigsby are acting and comedy gold. Just his expressions, mannerisms, opinions and old bullshit stories have me enthralled. I also love how he yearns to be a person of higher status and loves aristocracy. Just legendary stuff.

I never really got into TRAFORP and have always said I should. I think this thread is telling me to do it.

Re: "I hate Martin Welbourne"
Rising Damp is probably my favourite comedy, Rossiter in that was great. I did also like RAFORP too though. As someone said though, most episodes now would have to come with a caveat at the start with regard to Rigby's comment's to Phil:Rigsby denounces Philip's boast that he's the son of a chief. (Black Magic).
- All that means is his mud hut is bigger than all the other mud huts. Check out the below link:

They'll all be banned for racism, sexism and homophobia soon.

Especially Rising Damp, which I haven't seen on TV for ages. And was very funny.

Whatever happened to sunshine desserts?

Why can't we make tv like this any more? I remember how much I used to look forward to a program like this coming on, or Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Rising Damp, Porridge.

We had tons of them and they still get aired here and abroad and make money.

Look at the oscars just now, pile of shite.
